New analysis from Lewisham Labour reveals waiting lists at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust have fallen 21% since the General Election. The figures come as latest nationwide data reveals waiting lists across the country have hit a two year low – and registered a first fall in April in 17 years.

The falls are the result of the Labour Government’s determination to rescue our health service after 14 years of chaos and neglect. Ministers will soon publish their 10 year plan for the NHS, but actions already taken include:

  • Labour fulfilled its promised two million more appointments in our first year – in fact the Government has delivered that promise seven months early and massively surpassed the target – delivering not two, but 3.6 million extra appointments since July and rising.
  • In the Budget the Labour Government invested an extra £26 billion in health and care and the Spending Review brought record levels of investment in our National Health Service to get the NHS back on its feet and fit for the future
  • And Labour has recruited over 1,700 more GPs – and agreed a GP contract for the first time since the pandemic

Publishing the analysis, Labour’s Mayor Brenda Dacres said,

“People in Lewisham are still waiting far too long to get the care they need – but after years of stagnation, these figures show we’re finally starting to head in the right direction.

There’s still a long road ahead, but we’re seeing real progress: waiting lists are at their lowest in two years, millions more appointments are happening, over a thousand new GPs have been recruited, and £26 billion of extra funding is going into our NHS to help it recover.

But we’re not just investing – we’re modernising too. The Labour Government will soon set out a bold ten-year plan to future-proof our health service. That means moving from analogue to digital, shifting more care into the community, and focusing on prevention instead of just treating illness.

Here in Lewisham, I know people are eager for change. This isn’t the end – it’s the beginning. And the good news is, change is already underway.”
