Lewisham Council has welcomed the Government’s decision to freeze rail fares for the first time in thirty years, saying it will offer real help to residents who rely on local train services every day. With many people travelling from stations across the borough into central London or around southeast London, the freeze will ease pressure on household budgets at a time when costs are rising in many other areas.
Cllr Louise Krupski, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Action, said:
“Lots of people in Lewisham depend on trains for work, school or just getting around, and travel costs can really add up. This freeze will put money back in people’s pockets straight away. Affordable public transport is so important for our community and for encouraging more sustainable travel, so this is very welcome news for Lewisham.”
The Council also welcomed national plans to make rail fares simpler and expand Pay As You Go contactless travel, which will help residents get around more easily and avoid confusing pricing.
Lewisham Council will keep working with transport partners to make sure improvements to the rail network benefit everyone in the borough.
