Lewisham Council run by Lewisham Labour is proud to announce a significant increase in breast cancer screening rates over the past 12 months, with uptake rising from 48.8% to 59.2%—an extraordinary 10.4% improvement. This achievement comes as a result of dedicated public health efforts and innovative community engagement programmes.

While breast screening rates remain below the national target, the recent surge reflects the success of a multi-pronged awareness campaign. The Council commissioned Diversity and Wellbeing CIC to deliver the “It’s All Gone Tits Up” project, specifically aimed at increasing screening uptake among Black African and Black Caribbean communities. The project focused on raising awareness, understanding barriers to screening, addressing misconceptions, and building trust in local NHS and public health services.

Lewisham Council amplified its communications across all channels, including a full-page feature in Lewisham Life magazine and videos featuring a local resident and breast cancer survivor. Kings College Hospital also produced a series of educational videos on the importance of breast cancer screenings, which were promoted and showcased at in-person events.

Cllr Bell, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care said;

“It is a focus and priority for this administration and Labour Council to increase uptake in breast, cervical and bowel cancer screenings. These screenings can save your life. If you’ve not received a cancer screening appointment please chase it with your GP,”

Primary Care teams have played a vital role by following up with residents who did not take up their breast or bowel screening invitations, as well as proactively inviting patients for cervical screening. The South East London Cancer Alliance (SELCA) has further supported these efforts by funding promotional campaigns in Lewisham and neighbouring boroughs.

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a timely reminder for everyone to regularly check their breasts and attend free breast screening appointments offered every three years to those aged 50 to 71.

Lewisham Council remains committed to improving cancer screening rates and ensuring equitable access to life-saving health services for all communities.
