Lewisham Labour: Making Our Borough Safer for Everyone
By Councillor Oana Olaru-Holmes, Cabinet Member for Safer Lewisham, Refugees and Equalities
At Lewisham Labour, we are passionate about creating a borough where everyone feels safe, supported, and included. Over the past year, our work has delivered real, tangible improvements across public safety, equality, and community support.
Key highlights include:
- Safer Streets: Targeted interventions in Catford and Deptford through the Public Spaces Protection Order have reduced anti-social behaviour, making local public spaces safer and more welcoming.
- Collaborative Leadership: The Safer Lewisham Board brings together police, probation, and fire services to coordinate effective responses to crime and complex safety challenges.
- Support for All Residents: From welcoming over 100 asylum seekers as part of our Borough of Sanctuary commitment to advancing the Lewisham Disabled People’s Commission, we put lived experience at the centre of our policies.
- Tackling Gender-Based Violence: New investment in support services and a refreshed borough-wide strategy are helping prevent violence against women and girls.
- Community Impact: Initiatives like affordable funerals, improved bereavement support, and reinvesting proceeds from our recycling scheme into local charities show that safety also means caring for people when they need it most.
Lewisham Labour is committed to building a safer, fairer borough for all residents. Through partnership, innovation, and inclusive leadership, we will continue to make Lewisham a place where everyone can thrive.
