Lewisham Labour councillors delivered a proud and powerful moment at this week’s Full Council meeting as the Labour Group successfully passed a motion recognising the contribution of British West Indian and Global Majority service personnel to our borough and to the country.
The motion was brought forward by Labour Councillor Kim Powell and seconded by Labour Councillor Mark Jackson. It highlighted the long legacy of the West India Regiment and the British West India Regiment, from their early formation through to the more than fifteen thousand West Indian soldiers who served during the First World War. In a borough like Lewisham, home to one of the largest West Indian heritage communities in the United Kingdom, this history continues to live through the families and descendants of those who served.
Several veterans were present in the public gallery to witness the debate. When the Labour motion was agreed, the chamber rose in a full standing ovation. It was an emotional moment and a clear acknowledgement of service and sacrifice that has far too often been overlooked nationally.
The Labour Group has now committed the Council to ensuring that this history is fully recognised in Black History Month and Remembrance events, to exploring a permanent civic tribute, to working closely with veterans’ organisations including the Royal British Legion and the British West India Regiments Heritage Trust, and to strengthening education so that younger generations understand the full diversity of those who served.
Most importantly, the motion reinforces Lewisham Labour’s belief that recognition and support for veterans must reflect the true breadth of contribution across our armed forces, both past and present.
This is Labour standing firmly for fairness, for inclusion and for truth. For the veterans watching from the gallery, it was a moment that said with absolute clarity: your service is respected, your history matters, and Lewisham Labour will continue to ensure it is never forgotten.
