LGBT+ history month takes place every year in February. It celebrates the lives and achievements of people who identify as LGBT+ and is intended to raise awareness of, and combat prejudice against, the LGBT+ community. We have a vibrant and proud LGBT+ community in Lewisham, which is supported by an active LGBT+ forum within Lewisham Council, encompassing both staff & Councillors.
At the last Council meeting the Mayor and Councillors took the opportunity to be photographed with the new LGBT+ flag to show their support. The flag represents our commitment to equality and is a symbol of the Council’s support and appreciation for the LGBT+ community. We are also flying the LGBT+ flag from the Council building in Catford for the entirety of February.
The new LGBT+ flag has additional brown & black stripes, to represent BAME inclusivity, as well as pink & blue to represent the Trans community.
Last year during Black History Month and LGBT+ History Month Lewisham LGBT+ Forum used posters from their carefully curated BAME LGBT+ Recommended Books/Authors List as part of a poster display in Lewisham Library and others around the Borough of Lewisham.
This year Lewisham Library is hosting their Trans Recommended Books/Authors List in their window display space and also using some of the books in the list to form a display inside local libraries.
