On Sunday 9 November 2025, the people of Lewisham came together to honour the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to their country.

Residents, veterans, members of the armed forces, civic leaders and community groups gathered at memorials across the borough to pay their respects and reflect on the lasting legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

This year’s Remembrance Sunday service included a special tribute to First World War servicemen from Deptford who died shortly after returning home from battle. Buried in unmarked graves at Ladywell and Brockley Cemetery between 1919 and 1920, their resting places reflected the hardship their families endured. Thanks to research by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Lewisham Council’s Bereavement Service, the graves have now been identified, and plans are underway to install memorials in their honour.

Wreaths were laid by the Mayor, Brenda Dacres; the Speaker, Councillor Jacq Paschoud; local MPs; representatives from the armed forces; community organisations; and others. Their presence reaffirmed the borough’s commitment to remembering the fallen and supporting those who continue to serve.
