I hope you are having a great summer.
August is often a quieter time, with fewer council meetings and many people taking some well deserved time off. But it is also a lovely time of year, as we see our communities come together for summer fêtes, community events and activities across the borough.
I had my first one-to-one meeting with the new Mayor, where I raised questions about the Green Party’s vetting process. I also spoke about the ongoing union dispute, raised concerns about the Evelyn Family Hub, challenged his attacks on Labour colleagues, and asked about his plans and priorities for Lewisham.
I hope you and your family have had a chance to enjoy a well deserved break, and hopefully make the most of the summer weather, whether you have been enjoying it or trying to escape it!
Lewisham Labour is disappointed by the further delay to the reopening of Lewisham Library. The previous Labour administration secured £24 million to transform Lewisham town centre, including the refurbishment of the library, improvements to the high street and regeneration of Lewisham Market.
Residents have been waiting long enough. We hope the Green administration is doing everything possible to get the work finished and the library reopened as soon as possible.
Big congratulations to everyone across Lewisham getting their GCSE and A-level results this month!
You should be so proud of all the hard work, determination and effort it took to get here. Whatever comes next, we’re wishing you all the very best.
If any of our young members are looking for advice about what to do next and would find it helpful to have a chat with me, please encourage them to reply to this email. I’d be very happy to help.
Under the last Labour administration, we took action against the harm gambling is causing in our communities and joined Labour councils across London in demanding change.
Now that change is happening.
New powers will help councils stop betting shops and 24 hour gaming centres from taking over our high streets.
A win for local democracy. A win for our high streets. A win for Lewisham.
It was great to attend SE London Pride in New Cross last week and meet its co-founders, including Kemal Ibrahim. It was also lovely to see so many residents out enjoying the day with their friends and families. A brilliant day celebrating our community and everything that makes South East London so special.
