Lewisham Labour has backed the WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaign by passing a motion calling on the Government to rethink their current state pension arrangements.

Women born on or after 6th April 1951 have been unfairly affected by the changes to State Pension Age in 1995 and 2011 and many have been pushed into financial hardship. Many women were not informed of the changes until two years before retirement.

Cllr Hilary Moore, proposer of the motion, said “This is an issue that affects millions on women across the country, around 20,000 in Lewisham. Some women will be £12,000 worse off due to the changes and will have to retired 6 years later than they had originally thought. WASPI is not against equalisation of the state pension, but is calling for fair transitional arrangements”

“The WASPI campaign has successfully had this issue debated in Westminster and has had over 190,000 signatures to their petitions. It is clear that there is strong feeling about this and that the government has let these women down. This is because they have failed to inform women affected in enough time to make the necessary adjustment to their pension plans. This government must rethink their current plans and put in place fair transitional measures.”

WASPI south London commented “We would like to thank Lewisham Council for listening to us and passing the WASPI Motion for transitional arrangements to be put in place for these 1950s women.'
