A Labour Government would freeze Council Tax in Lewisham

New analysis from Lewisham Labour reveals a Labour government Council Tax Freeze would save households in Lewisham more than £8,930,000 this year. The average Lewisham household would save £72.

Keir Starmer launched Labour’s local election campaign by announcing that a Labour Government would cancel this year’s council tax hike – fully funded by a proper windfall tax on the bumper profits of oil and gas companies.

The announcement follows a Conservative budget that saw £1bn tax cut for the richest 1%.

Publishing the analysis Amanda de Ryk, Lewisham Labour’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Strategy, said:

“Labour wants to build a better Lewisham – and it starts with putting more money in your pocket.

“Prices are soaring, bills are rising, mortgages and rents are through the roof and taxes are at their highest level in 70 years – but Labour is on your side. A Labour Government would bring in a proper windfall tax on the oil and gas giants and use it to fund a council tax freeze. While the Tories are prioritising handouts to the richest people in the country, Labour is backing families in Lewisham with real help now to get through the cost-of-living crisis.”
