It was a landslide victory for Labour in Lewisham with Damien Egan decisively re-elected as the Mayor of Lewisham with a record 58% of the vote and Labour returning 54 councillors. Mayor Egan thanked the voters for putting their trust in him and Labour once again and that he would continue to listen to their concerns and work with them to find solutions. Lewisham Labour had ran an exciting campaign speaking to over 27,000 people, writing a community-led manifesto and focussing on both their achievements since 2018 and their priorities for the next four years.

Mayor Damien Egan said,

“Thank you to everyone who voted in these elections and for putting your trust in Labour once again. Since the New Year we have spoken to over 27,000 people right across the borough. We have listened and heard your concerns. Time and again people told me they were worried about how they could afford to pay the bills and that they were angry the Conservative government continued to do nothing to fix the cost of living crisis.

I also heard people say they were glad to live in a Labour council that was on their side which not only got the basics right, but had also delivered over 1,200 new social homes, become the UK’s first Borough of Sanctuary and was emerging as a leader on climate action. I will continue to be a mayor for the community and I will work with you to find solutions to the issues that affect us all.”

“Congratulations to Damien and all of our successful Labour candidates. It has been a long election and we always want to be speaking to our residents.

I am proud that we all stood on a bold manifesto that was written together with the community. The hard work begins now and we are determined to deliver on this manifesto to make sure Lewisham has the best parks in London, deliver 800 new social homes, improve access to GPs, support Lewisham’s schools to succeed, have cleaner streets and create 4,000 new local jobs.
