Savage Tory Tax Credit cuts set to hit 15,000 families in Lewisham

The Tories are set to inflict massive cuts on support for families in Lewisham.
Before the election, David Cameron promised to protect Tax Credits. Yet just months after, the Tories are preparing to force through cuts that will leave hard-working low income families in Lewisham an average of £1,300 a year worse off. The plans will hit the income of 15,000 families in Lewisham and three million nationwide.
Labour introduced Tax Credits in 2003 in order to help make work pay, and to tackle poverty. These Tory cuts will force 200,000 children into povertyby 2020.
The Tories say that they are for working people. Yet whilst they give tax cuts to millionaires, they are due to hit millions of hard working families who are struggling to get by on low incomes. They claim that their ‘National Living Wage’ will make up for these cuts. But it will be just £7.20, well below the real Living Wage in London which is £9.15. And it won’t apply to those under 25. In fact, for every pound the Tories take away in tax credits, people will only receive 26p as a result of the National Living Wage.
Labour is calling on the Government to reverse this decision. You can add your voice by signing this petition. We would balance the books, but we would do so in a fair and balanced way, not by hitting poor families or driving up child poverty.
Lewisham Labour is working hard to protect local people and help tackle poverty locally. We will freeze Council Tax next year – the sixth year in seven that it has not increased. And we were the first Council in the country to pay the Living Wage.

Sir Steve Bullock Mayor of Lewisham said ‘these cuts will hit hard working families in Lewisham hard. They are undermining the incentive to work and punishing people who are doing the right thing.’
Cllr Joe Dromey, Cabinet Member for Policy and Performance said ‘the Tories said we were all in this together. But they’re cutting tax credits that support the poorest families, whilst cutting tax for the richest. Thousands of families in Lewisham will be hit, and hundreds of children will be pushed into poverty. Labour are fighting hard and standing up against these savage cuts. If you want to help, join us.’
