No vote, no voice! Lewisham Labour marks National Voter Registration Drive

Lewisham Labour have called on people to sign up to vote ahead of the Mayoral elections in May.

This week is National Voter Registration Drive week. Organised by Bite the Ballot, last year’s NVRD saw an amazing 441,500 people register to vote, making it the most successful voter registration campaign ever.

It’s more important than ever for people to register to vote. Under botched changes to the system of electoral registration, 800,000 people have dropped off the electoral roll. Students, young people, private and social renters, and black and minority ethnic (BAME) people have all been disproportionately hit by the changes.

In May there will be elections for the Mayor and London Assembly. With the result set to be close, it’s really important that people register to vote.

Lewisham Labour have been working hard to ensure people are registered to vote. Lewisham Council has also been encouraging people to sign up to vote, including working with Operation Black Vote on a voter registration drive.

Lord Roy Kennedy, Councillor for Crofton Park and Chair of Lewisham Council’s Electoral Registration Working Party said ‘The actions of the government have led to 800,000 across the UK people losing their right to vote in this May's elections including thousands here in Lewisham. Don't get caught out on Polling Day, check you are registered and if you are not sign up it only takes a couple of minutes. In May we will elect the next Mayor of London make sure you have your say.'

Joe Dromey, Councillor for New Cross Ward said ‘the Government’s botched changes to the electoral role risk disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of people. As these people are less likely to vote Tory, the Government don’t seem to be bothered. Voting is a fundamental right. We need to ensure that everyone can have their say in the elections in May.
