Lewisham Labour signals continued commitment to Transport Improvements

At yesterday’s Lewisham Council meeting, Lewisham Labour Councillors added their call for TfL to take control of the running of suburban London’s rail services.

Having TfL running the London Overground services in south east London has been a big success. With the rail franchise run by Southeastern coming to an end in 2018, it offers a great opportunity for TfL to take responsibility for this important network.

Lewisham Labour has always worked hard to improve transport links for Lewisham residents. We fought for the extension of the DLR and the East London Line Overground. We are continuing to campaign hard to bring the Bakerloo line to Lewisham.

The motion proposed by Cllr Ami Ibitson was passed unanimously by Labour Councillors last night. It noted that devolving the Southeastern rail franchise to TfL “would result in better rail services facilities and accountability for Lewisham commuters”; it would also bring down the cost of travelling across London for Lewisham residents, allowing travel from Lewisham across the TfL network on a single journey ticket as opposed to the current National Rail ticket price as well as the TfL ticket price.

Cllr Ibitson who proposed the motionsaid“The fragmented nature of our rail industry does not serve passengers well, there is often inconsistency between train operators, and when problems arise it is too easy for the various service providers to play the blame game, rather than being held to account and fixing the issue. London Overground has been very successful and appreciated by passengers. It makes sense for London to have a consistent rail operator, and for Transport for London are the obvious choice for this. Transferring London services from the Southeastern franchise to a London Overground style model would be a good move and would pave the way for similar transfers as other franchises expire. I’m pleased that Lewisham Council is supporting this proposal.”

Cllr Barnham who seconded the motion said “my constituents who use Crofton Park station know all too well how much the service needs to improve. We in Lewisham labour group will continue to campaign for change, including devolution of suburban train lines into TfL control and the much-needed Bakerloo Line extension”.
