Lewisham Labour welcomes the election of both labour candidates Sophie McGeevor for Brockley ward and Joyce Jacca for Evelyn ward. They won the by-election with 48% and 53.4% of the vote respectively.
They bring extensive knowledge and experience to their respective wards and both live locally. Sophie was born and brought up in Brockley, and she currently works part-time as a communications manager for a charity whilst also completing her PhD in History. Joyce has lived in Evelyn for over 13 years and has been involved in community development in the area, including on the Sure Start Parent Advisory Group, the Lewisham Ethnic Minorities Partnership, and the 2000 Community Action Centre management committee.
Cllr Sophie McGeevor responded to her victory saying ‘I am so happy and honoured to have been elected as a Labour Councillor for Brockley Ward. I will be representing a community where I grew up and live now, a place I care about deeply. Brockley ward is the most marginal seat in Lewisham yet we won a thumping majority. This is testament to the dedicated Labour organisers and canvassers who knocked on doors and spoke to voters almost every day of our four week campaign.'
Cllr Joyce Jacca outlined her priorities by saying “It’s community first, it's time for change in community development and we need a village ethos approach which goes back into the communities and takes on board their views. If we are to increase membership and votes for the Labour Party we need to be visible and gain the trust of our communities.”
Cllr Brenda Dacres, Chair of Lewisham labour group, welcome the result and said “The results in both Brockley and Evelyn Wards are fantastic, and we now have two great additions to the Council’s Labour Group in Sophie McGeever and Joyce Jacca. I would like to thank the residents of Brockley and Evelyn Wards who have put their trust in our candidates, and what Labour has to offer locally. The foundation of that trust is based on the hard work of both former Councillors Alicia Kennedy and Crada Onuegbu. We had a great campaign in both wards and our thanks go to all those who helped delivered such great results."
Mayor Steve Bullock commented “I welcome Cllrs Joyce Jacca and Cllr Sophie McGeevor who will carry on the good work of the previous Labour Councillors in those wards. These are challenging times for local communities and this result told us that when we address the issues that matter and put strong candidates up our fellow citizens respond positively.”
